Joinery and Metalwork Technical Proposal: Thermal Performance and Compliance in Public Contracts

Joinery and metalwork contracts require precise proposals on product performance. The buyer evaluates thermal compliance (Uw coefficient), AEV rating, break-in resistance, and for metalwork, guardrail structural calculations.

Expected performance in a joinery proposal

The evaluator prioritises thermal performance: the Uw thermal transmittance coefficient must comply with RE2020 for new builds or existing RT for rehabilitation. The AEV (Air, Water, Wind) rating must suit the building's exposure. Each proposed window must be accompanied by a certified technical data sheet with test reports and mandatory CE marking (NF EN 14351-1).

For metalwork, guardrails must comply with NF P 01-012 (minimum 1m height, baluster spacing) with a structural resistance calculation. Significant steel structures fall under NF EN 1090.

Structure of an effective joinery-metalwork proposal

The proposal must combine product data and installation methodology to convince.

Technical data sheets and layout plan

Attach complete technical sheets with certified performance for each window type: Uw, Sw, TLw, AEV rating, acoustic Rw. Specify finishes: RAL, anodising, Qualicoat powder coating, Qualimarine for coastal locations.

Integration details and weatherproofing

The window/masonry junction is the critical point. Detail weatherproofing solutions: compressed foam tape, sealant, sill flashing. Junction infiltration is the number one source of claims.

Metalwork specifics

Guardrails and handrails require structural calculations demonstrating horizontal load resistance (NF P 01-012). Fire doors require fire rating test reports and CE marking. Anti-panic bars must comply with NF EN 1125. Significant steel structures fall under NF EN 1090 with execution class requirements (EXC1 to EXC4).

Errors that cost points

Inadequate AEV rating — Proposing standard-rated windows for an exposed high-rise technically disqualifies the bid.

No Uw coefficient — Often a weighted scoring criterion. Its absence prevents thermal performance evaluation.

Junction not detailed — Weatherproofing at the window/masonry junction is a remarked gap.

Guardrails without calculations — Missing NF P 01-012 structural calculations is a technical non-compliance.
